Bill Sullivan is a long-time player and enthusiast who has been exploring visual elements that engage with the spaces of art and tennis since 2007, when he began photographing tennis courts on LCD screens. Since then, he has worked with the court as a central motif, investigating various aspects of abstraction through painting, printmaking, photography, and sculptural forms. In 2013, he first incorporated the court into the artist book format with Forest Hills, and has since produced court-oriented books including The Glass Court and Courts & Covers. This year sees the release of the two-book set COURT 1520–2020: An Investigation of Court Spaces Over the Last 500 Years, which features contributions by long-time player and artist Charles Johnstone. The set functions as a lyrical journal, combining images and text to traverse the histories of lawn tennis, court tennis, racquets, trinquet, and squash over the past five centuries.
